TITLE: Scarlet Moon
TALE: Little Red Riding Hood
AUTHOR: Debbie ViguiƩ
ALSO BY AUTHOR: Midnight Pearls, Violet Eyes
Yep, this author may indeed have a style. Scarlet Moon is just as fast-paced as Midnight Pearls, only with less main characters. I didn't get attached to any of them though, so that's a point in favor of Pearls.
I think the best part of the book is the bantering between Ruth and William. The rest of it is really just okay. It seems to use a lot of cliches, aside from the usual fairy tale ones (curse, magical old woman, nobility and commoner in love).
-Girl ahead of her time: Ruth is a blacksmith, filling in for her brother and cousin who go off to the Crusades. She is, naturally, viewed as a freak by the rest of the people.
-Taciturn father: Although he gets better near the end of the book.
-Wolf = werewolf: Really, how many times have we seen this?
-Man damaged by war: Peter's REALLY fucked up. But he never goes into detail about what happened.
And the curse is broken WAY too easily. She threw the painting in the fire and that ended it? Really? That's the best you could do, Debbie?
This one is definitely nowhere near as good as Midnight Pearls. That one left me wanting more. This one made me want it to be over faster.
