TITLE: Before Midnight
TALE: Cinderella
AUTHOR: Cameron Dokey
ALSO BY AUTHOR: The Storyteller's Daughter, Beauty Sleep, Sunlight and Shadow, Golden, Belle, Wild Orchid, Winter's Child, The World Above
Before Midnight had Dokey's usual very likeable characters. The book wasn't a speed read with too many boring details and not enough characterization like Golden. It felt like it was just the right length and we learned just the right amount about the characters. I enjoyed Dokey's twist on the Cinderella tale, making her father the bad guy and the stepmother and stepdaughters positive characters. Anastasia was a bit demanding, but she had reason to be, and she turned out quite well in the end. I liked that the supernatural elements from the original tale were replaced with absolutely mundane ones. There were some supernatural aspects, but they're very minimal. Definitely one I recommend.
