TITLE: The Rose Bride
TALE: The White Bride and the Black Bride
AUTHOR: Nancy Holder
ALSO BY AUTHOR: Spirited
The Rose Bride is the only book from the series that I owned, tried to read and ended up putting on Paperback Swap. I didn't even make it halfway through. I rebought it when I decided to do these reviews and this time I vowed to finish it. I did. And it's hands down the worst of the series so far. I'll go through its many flaws.
1) The author mentions that she was inspired by the Ever After movie. It's obvious. In the movie, the father brings home the new steps, but shortly after he goes off on business and has a heart attack on the road right in front of the house. In the book, he's a far worse character and is away on business when he dies, so the girl doesn't even see him. The stepmother sells off household items to pay the bills. A servant is accused of theft and is eventually rescued by the main character. The elements are a little TOO close to the movie.
2) Like Snow, the book starts out REALLY slow and depressing. Unlike Snow, it STAYS that way. It was absolutely painful to read all the crap Ombrine put Rose through. I was so fucking sick of things never working out for her, not even a little. They finally do, but not until the very end.
3) Did not care about any of the characters even the tiniest bit.
4) Like Spirited, the supernatural elements were out there to the point of being distracting. There's a Greek mythology connection that just feels so wrong.
5) The original tale is very short and this book should have been a hell of a lot shorter.
Skip this one. And skip Spirited, too.
